THE PRACTICAL GUIDE

Choose the setup.
Then choose the quantities.

Practical specification questions for propagation and container procurement. For larger systems, use the project sourcing brief.

Start with the tray footprint.

Measure the growing space and the outside dimensions of any existing base tray. A shared nominal size does not guarantee that a tray, insert and cover will fit together.

Cell count is only part of the specification.

Cell depth and volume help determine how much space each plant has before transplanting. Provide the crop or plant type, preferred cell size and the intended growing stage when comparing options.

Consider height and ventilation.

A clear propagation cover helps retain humidity around seeds or cuttings. The suitable height depends on the material being raised; adjustable vents let you manage the enclosed environment.

A dome is not a substitute for monitoring conditions. Follow the growing guidance for your crop and the instructions for the chosen equipment.

A warming mat and a thermostat do different jobs.

A warming mat supplies heat. A compatible thermostat uses a probe to control it. Confirm whether the controller is included, what load it supports and how the probe should be placed.

Ask for the exact equipment model, dimensions, electrical ratings and operating instructions. Do not assume a product is waterproof or suitable for outdoor use from its appearance.

Temperature needs vary by plant, growing medium and surroundings. Avoid using a single temperature recommendation for every crop.

Compare the dimensions that matter.

For pots, include the top width or diameter, height, capacity and any matching tray requirements. For existing production systems, check that the container fits the bench, handling tray and transport arrangement.

Label dimensions and writing methods also matter. Include whether the labels will be written by hand, printed or used outdoors.

Plan the order as a whole.

Include the quantities for every product, acceptable alternatives and your delivery postcode. If the growing schedule depends on a particular date, state it before the quotation is prepared.

Pack sizes, stock availability and freight can affect the final order. Confirm them together rather than treating delivery as an afterthought.
